I have been really looking forward to today, and for someone who doesn't really swim, hates getting her hair wet, can't stand sand or seaweed on her feet and quite frankly is very happy looking at the sea but not too happy to go in it, surfing probably shouldn't be my first choice of activity!!
But the lovely Carrie has organised it and I thought 'when in Rome......'
So it was an early start and off to Goolwa with Carrie, Graham, Daniel and Tracey, thtough the lovely South Australian countryside to Goolwa. We met with our lovely instructor, Kingo (very tall indeed!), eased (or squeezed in my case!) into out wetsuits, picked up a board and headed to the beach.
He told us all the rules of the surf, then shared his technique of getting on the board (I was just happy to be in a wetsuit and holding a board!!) and after about 20 mins it was into the sea. Now, if I tell you the waves were really high then you will think I'm exagerating. But they were really high for me! About 1.5 metres. Bloody hell I thought as I struggled with my board into the water (which was lovely and cool on a day that was pushing 40 degrees!) And then it was time to just do it!
And do it I did!!! Woooooooooooooooooooooo! It was so much fun! The first time i caught a wave and surfed all the way into the shore (laying on the board, but still.....) I screamed all the way in! I did really well actually getting on the board, but towards the end of the lesson I actually got my knees up onto it and then one leg.......then wipeout!
This was Tracey's first lesson and she was up and flying! Carrie, Graham and Daniel had been before and they all managed to get up at least once. but I was just happy that I had conquered my fears. My hair was wet, my eyes were stinging and there was seaweed stuck to my leg but I had done it! We were battered, bruised and tired but all smiling like loons! Carrie bangedher knee, I got a board in the ribs (nice bruise developing) and we all got a few scrapes but it was so much fun! Again again!!!
An celebratory ice cream followed, and then it was back through the gorgeous windy roads (via a village bakery for a beef curry pie - they love their pies - and a pumpkin, spinich and feta quiche for my tea) back to Adelaide (we got a bit lost but it was very scenic!!)
I decided that what I needed today was a bit of chill time, what with my next (and final......Oh God....) road trip starting tomorrow. So I bid farewell to the gang and headed out to get supplies and relax. Still didn't get to bed till midnight, but I did spend a lovely couple of hours on the Hutsons beautiful entertainment deck, watching the sunset and enjoying a beer and my tea,
Night night from this weary surf chick.........
